Summer is around the corner, and it is important to ensure that your car AC works efficiently to help keep you comfortable and confident while driving. Here are some simple tips on how to keep your car’s AC working perfectly even when the temperature rises:

Check refrigerant levels

The air conditioner cools the air with the help of a refrigerant. So, checking the refrigerant levels should be an essential component of the AC maintenance checklist. Most cooling-related issues are a result of insufficient refrigerant levels.

Use the right refrigerant

If you feel that your car air conditioner is not cooling as well as it used to, apart from low refrigerant levels, it could be due to the use of the wrong kind of refrigerant. The AC should have only HVAC-approved refrigerant. Using cheaper chemicals can save you some bucks but will compromise your comfort.

Keep your condenser clean

The AC’s condenser is located at the front of your car. Over time, it can become clogged with dust, dirt, and other debris. This can affect its ability to cool the refrigerant. So, it is important to regularly clean the condenser to keep it free from any obstructions.

 Get the hoses checked

If the AC is performing at sub-par levels and you notice it is losing power, you should check the hoses. If the hoses are bulging, crackling, or damaged in any way, you should have them replaced. Another common problem that can prevent your AC from performing efficiently is loose hoses. When they are not tight around the system, debris can enter into spaces where it can cause extensive damage. So, make sure the hoses are fastened securely and in good condition.

Clean the radiator

The AC’s condenser is located in front of the engine’s radiator. In case the engine is overheating, it can have an impact on air conditioning. When the radiator is overheating, the excessive heat may get transferred to the condenser, and it may not be able to cool as well as it should. It is recommended that the radiator be cleaned as part of routine maintenance.

Turn off the AC before turning off the engine

In modern vehicles, turning off the AC abruptly is unlikely to harm the air conditioning system. However, it is still recommended that you turn it off a minute before turning off the engine to allow the system to equalize. This also reduces the wear on the system. Also, when you start the vehicle, the battery does not have to work harder to turn on the air conditioning while simultaneously turning the engine over.

Check engine leakages

Leakages from AC gas pipelines are a common reason car air conditioning does not work as efficiently as it should. So, checking for any leakages from the AC gas pipelines at regular intervals is a good idea.

Use recirculation mode as much as possible

Using the air conditioner in recirculation mode improves efficiency as the AC works quickly. In this mode, there is no entry of dirty outdoor air and unpleasant odors from outside. If you do not switch on the recirculation mode, the AC will constantly cool warm air from outside, and the AC will have to work harder, which puts more stress on the blower and compressor. So, it is recommended that recirculation mode should be used as much as possible.
